How I Work
A clear, straightforward process
Working with a new consultant can feel like a big commitment. My aim is to make the process as clear and low-risk as possible, from the first conversation through to delivery and beyond.
Initial conversation
We begin with a straightforward conversation about what you are trying to build or achieve. There is no commitment at this stage — the aim is simply to understand your situation, the problem you are trying to solve and whether I am the right person to help. This can happen by phone, video call or in person.
Discovery and requirements
If we decide to proceed, I will spend time understanding your requirements in more depth. This involves working through what the product needs to do, who it is for, what the technical constraints are, what similar products exist and what the commercial objectives look like. This is typically a structured process that results in a clear set of documented requirements.
Recommendations and proposal
Based on the discovery work, I will provide recommendations on the approach, the technology, the project structure and the expected costs and timeline. Where development work is involved, I will provide a detailed proposal that sets out what is included, how the work will be delivered and what the commercial terms are.
Planning and delivery
Once a proposal is agreed, work begins. I prefer to work in a structured way with clear milestones, regular progress updates and defined review points. I communicate clearly and honestly throughout, raising issues early rather than allowing them to grow into problems. Development is delivered in stages, with opportunities to review and adjust direction.
Launch and ongoing support
Launching a product is not the end of the project. I help clients plan and execute a reliable launch, and I can continue to support the product after launch — through operations, maintenance, new feature development or ongoing consultancy. Many of my client relationships continue well beyond initial delivery.
A few things worth knowing
Flexibility
Engagements can take different forms depending on what is needed. I can work on a fixed-price project basis, a day rate, a retainer arrangement or as an ongoing operational partner. I am happy to discuss what structure makes most sense for your situation.
Directness
I will tell you honestly if I think a project has problems or if an approach is unlikely to work. I would rather raise a concern early than allow it to become an expensive problem later.
Practical focus
My aim is always to produce something useful and working, not to generate complexity. I avoid over-engineering and favour practical, maintainable solutions that can be operated and improved over time.
Communication
I communicate clearly and consistently throughout a project. You will always know the current status, what decisions need to be made and what is coming next. I do not disappear once work has begun.
